Ok, so why does Slumdog Millionaire work so well? Lots of reasons. But the one I haven’t really heard too much about is that Boyle really harnessed the power of the medium with this flick. The story of Jamal, Latika and Salim wouldn’t have been as visceral without the assistance of Mumbai’s throbbing imagery. The wild pastiches of shanty towns, onion domed palaces, and packed thoroughfares all give the movie the urgency and desperation it needs to push the plot along. I love it when artists make good on the promise of film. So many others waste it.
I like movies so much! Don’t you?
ps. You have the opening monologue of Trainspotting memorized but do you even know how terrific SHALLOW GRAVE IS? I bet nottttt.
